Introduction
Come on over to San Michez, at the crossroads where crazy wisdom meets lazy rhythm, and pull up a log or a lawn chair. Whittle yourself a weenie stick, skewer a new thought, and hold it over the flame of your imagination. Turn it slowly. Careful not to burn it. (Try not to analyze the ingredients too closely. It’s tasty; just leave it at that. If you knew what all went into it, you might never want another one.) So many books pretending to offer objective answers (101 Steps to Satori, Nine Golden Keys that Unlock the Gates of Wahoo, The Idiot’s Guide to the Essence of Utmost, etc.) can evoke a sense of failure. “Dang! I read Tuesdays with Yahweh and Who Moved My Root Chakra? and I still don’t get it!” The journey is subjective, more like an Easter egg hunt than a 50-yard dash. Seeing as how we spend most of our time traveling, a book about how to enjoy the journey is ever so useful. And fun. I don’t know any enlightened or self-actualized people. I don’t even know any who know any. I'm just trying to make some sense of the world and have a ball along the way. This is a self-help book. As you know, the good Lord helps those who help themselves. So help yourself to some of these campfire tales.
