In Her Write Mind

Millie was trying to write an essay about wisdom, only she kept spelling it wizdum. She knew it was wrong because it just didn’t look right, but darned if she could figure out the correct spelling.

At first, she blamed herself thinking I’m so stupid.

Then she hit upon a happier solution: She blamed the pencil. If I’d use a different pencil, the word would come out right. Why, see here! This is a number two pencil; no wonder my spelling is so crappy. I’ll get a number one pencil. Better yet, a number three!

Of course that didn’t help. She tried several pencils. She went out and bought an assortment of new pens. She even tried writing it with a burnt Popsicle stick.

Then the light went on in her mind. She wasn’t stupid. It wasn’t the pencil’s fault. She got a dictionary and learned the correct spelling. Once she could spell it in her head, she could spell it on the paper.

She realized that trying to make changes in the outer world without first making the necessary corrections inside just doesn’t work. Never has, never will.
